Having named our brewery for the Historic CottonTown neighborhood next door, we needed a logo that emphasized the history of the area and the brewery as a destination to come to. Pouring through newspaper archives and internet searches eventually lead us to the fascinating realization that Columbia was home to arguably the first electric street car line in the U.S.! The initial line connected CottonTown, the State House and the Congaree river.
In his blog article, “How Columbia Rolled“, local real estate agent, Terry Edwards, provided a brief history of the Columbia street car line, and a vintage photo that directly inspired our brewery logo (see above). Hidden Columbia provided this interesting story about the Columbia Street Car Line:
They created Shandon, "the whitest town in the south", they caused a massive corporate conspiracy, built casinos, were the subject of boycotts. They are gone, and all traces of them are gone—or are they?
